My Heart Gives You Love

Ah Memorial Day - holidays like these always create so memories unto themselves.  I'll admit that when faced with a mailbox (both physical and virtual) full of ads and the glorious prospect of a full day of nothing major planned to do, my first thought was not of others.  Nor, really, was my second thought: I have so many memories of barbeques, spending time on a lake (we do, after all, live in Minnesota!), and - more importantly - spending time with family and friends, that my second thoughts went in that direction.  Clearly,  it's easy to forget the real meaning of today.

For almost 150 years, we Americans have been fortunate to have this day to celebrate our armed forces and our veterans.  I hope that I won't let myself forget again, and I am so happy I just found that Walt Whitman did such an amazing job of encapsulating how I hope to remember.

I hope you all enjoy this day, but also take a moment to thank the service men and women in your life.  Many thanks to those I know!!

THE last sunbeam
Lightly falls from the finish'd Sabbath,
On the pavement here, and there beyond it is looking,
Down a new-made double grave.

Lo, the moon ascending,
Up from the east the silvery round moon,
Beautiful over the house-tops, ghastly, phantom moon,
Immense and silent moon.

I see a sad procession,
And I hear the sound of coming full-key'd bugles,
All the channels of the city streets they're flooding,
As with voices and with tears.

I hear the great drums pounding,
And the small drums steady whirring,
And every blow of the great convulsive drums,
Strikes me through and through.

For the son is brought with the father,
(In the foremost ranks of the fierce assault they fell,
Two veterans son and father dropt together,
And the double grave awaits them.)

Now nearer blow the bugles,
And the drums strike more convulsive,
And the daylight o'er the pavement quite has faded,
And the strong dead-march enwraps me.

In the eastern sky up-buoying,
The sorrowful vast phantom moves illumin'd,
('Tis some mother's large transparent face,
In heaven brighter growing.)

O strong dead-march you please me!
O moon immense with your silvery face you soothe me!
O my soldiers twain! O my veterans passing to burial!
What I have I also give you.

The moon gives you light,
And the bugles and the drums give you music,
And my heart, O my soldiers, my veterans,
My heart gives you love.

-Walt Whitman, "Dirge of Two Veterans" from Leaves of Grass (1900).

Weekend Bumpdate - Week 23

Her Perspective:

Best Moment: Getting the crib assembled.

Symptoms: I'm pregnant, that's for sure.  I get kicked regularly, have to go to the bathroom hourly - if not more - and always seem to be hungry.

Cravings/Aversions: Dairy products - I now "get" the whole pregnant-ladies-and-ice-cream thing, and I was "that" pregnant lady earlier this week - thanks Adrienne and Loren for humoring me!!! (Co-Editor's note: This is no joke. In addition to suddenly wanting ice cream just minutes after proclaiming herself full several times this week, Laura was eating sour cream on her nachos this weekend like it was salsa - and her favorite salsa, at that. She also had strawberry shortcake for breakfast not once, but twice - with extra extra extra whipped cream).

----------------------------------------

His Perspective:
Best Moment: I got kicked so hard this week that I literally watched my hand move - it's definitely not just flutters anymore!

Symptoms: None, other than constant amusement while watching my wife eat.

Loving the new rugCravings/Aversions: I have an aversion to putting cribs together after 9:00pm, but that doesn't seem to matter much (although I admit that it is nice to have it finished).

----------------------------------------

Luigi's Perspective:
Best Moment: I really love having a brand-new rug to roll around on in the room that Mom and Dad emptied out.  It smells spiffy, and it's great for getting that one spot on my back.  Oh, and the walk we went on this morning was pretty awesome, too.  Seriously, did you smell that tree?  It was amazing - and I totally peed on it, so it's mine now.

Luigi and LauraSymptoms: I'm confused because for some reason there's not as much room next to Mom in bed anymore. And even though she's been really sleepy and cuddly (and for a while there wasn't feeling so hot and needed me to take care of her), lately I keep feeling like she's too wiggly when I'm on her lap.  It's really strange - like I'm getting kicked or something.  Plus both Mom and Dad have been acting weird - moving furniture and everything all over the place, making the floors all slippery and everything smell weird, and then putting a lot of it back.  Seriously people, don't you know I live here, too, and I might not like stuff being moved for no reason?  It's stressful!

Cravings/Aversions: I've been craving walks, food, cuddles, chicken jerky, more walks, games of fetch, belly rubs, trips to the dog park, more food, wash, rinse, repeat (except don't wash me!).  I guess my only aversion is not wanting anyone to leave me.  We fluffy dudes get lonely, you know?

If you Give a Laura a Box

Note: This is an update from my last post (please read it first to truly "get" this one!)

------------------------------------------------------

If you let a Laura buy boxed furniture....

She's going to excitedly put it in the car and drive straight home (or, alternatively, she's going to stalk the UPS or FedEx websites and know exactly what moment it is delivered, at which point she'll excitedly call Loren).

Once she gets home, she's going to want to bring the box inside (and she'll probably need some help).

When the box is safely inside, she'll probably want to just "take a peek" to make sure that all the parts are included.

So she'll have to open the box.

And once the box is open, she'll have to take all the parts out in order to check them.

After all the parts are out, Laura will rationalize that she's made such a mess that she won't be able to put them back in, and also - why bother?
Guilty Laura self-portrait:
Oh No! The box has been opened!
Then Laura will go hunting for a screwdriver, a hammer, and whatever other tools she needs.

If she sees Loren, she'll tell him she's just prepping "for later."

And, if Loren sees Laura doing this, he knows that it's only a matter of time before he gets called into the room for "just a little help holding a few things" while Laura reads the directions.

Because once Laura starts reading the directions, it's all over.

She will forgo sleep, comfortable things, watching movies, or really any other activity until the furniture piece is assembled.

And then she'll be soooo happy and give Loren a big hug for helping out.

Laura has a wonderful husband, a beautiful crib, and a funny habit, doesn't she?!  ;o)

She certainly thinks so, and she is going to go give that husband another big hug right now.

The End.

------------------------------------------------------

Note: Although I do think this is fun, I do agree that it's a bit silly.  I refuse to get any more furniture - or even a mattress - until at least mid-July.
